Although the U.S. Navy decommissioned the Mare Island Naval Shipyard at the end of the 20th century, much of Mare Island is still under the Navy’s control as a Superfund cleanup site. This is due to pollution from its long role in manufacturing battleships and submarines for the Navy. Thankfully, though, not all of Mare Island is toxic.
